In short
Clean milking and careful handling matter, but they do not make raw milk reliably safe to drink. Pasteurisation is a separate protective step, and milk still needs appropriate handling and temperature control afterward.

From the Namibian discussions
The Namibian collection included a video claiming that one farm’s raw milk tested cleaner than pasteurised milk. A comparison like this can prompt useful questions about hygiene and sampling. It does not demonstrate that raw milk is generally safer, and a low count on one test does not exclude every harmful organism.
Ask what was actually tested
CDC guidance states that good farm practices reduce but cannot eliminate contamination risk, and a negative raw-milk test is not a safety guarantee. Different tests measure different things. Ask for the organism or indicator tested, sampling date, method and handling conditions before comparing results.
Keep the food chain visible
- Choose pasteurised milk from a reliable source and follow its storage instructions.
- Use clean containers and avoid returning leftovers to the original container.
- Maintain the required cold chain during transport, storage and serving. A cool-feeling room is not a refrigerator.
- For dairy production, obtain a validated process and appropriate professional training rather than relying on a social-media heating demonstration.
Do not use taste as the test
Milk can contain harmful organisms without an obvious warning in taste or appearance. People at greater risk of severe foodborne illness, including young children, pregnant people, older adults and those with weakened immunity, especially need safer food choices. Fermentation, souring or an attractive farm story does not replace a validated safety process.
Make local experience useful
Local producers can contribute valuable practical knowledge about cleaning, reliable chilling, transport delays and power interruptions. Record those conditions with test results. A useful wiki contribution explains the process and its limits rather than ranking farms from one laboratory number or repeating a claim of zero risk.
Namibian climate and microclimate
Heat, long journeys and unreliable refrigeration can undermine milk handling in both rural and urban settings. Plan the route and cold storage before collecting milk. Shade alone does not maintain a specified refrigerated temperature.
Your first practical step
Check the full route from collection to serving and identify the weakest temperature-control step. Ask a food-safety professional how to validate that step if you produce or sell dairy food.
