Cactus drip irrigation: turn operating time into litres

WhatsApp

In short

An irrigation schedule becomes useful when it states how much water reaches the planting. “Once a month” leaves out the flow, duration and number of emitters. Convert your own system into litres, then check where that water goes in the soil.

From the Namibian discussions

A Namibian grower described a hectare of Opuntia with emitters spaced 0.30 m apart, rated at 3 litres per hour, and irrigation on one day per month. The actual operating hours were not specified. Preserve this as a local example, not a complete schedule to copy.

Measure the actual flow

Collect water from several emitters for the same timed interval. Include the beginning, middle and end of the line. A nominal 3 litre-per-hour emitter running for two hours would deliver 6 litres; use measured output if it differs from the label. Two hours is an arithmetic example, not a crop recommendation.

Count the emitters serving the row

Multiply the measured litres per hour by operating hours and emitter count. Ten emitters at 3 litres per hour for two hours deliver 60 litres to that section. Do not automatically call this 60 litres per plant: wetting patterns may overlap, and some water may fall between widely spaced plants.

Check the wetting pattern

  1. Record the starting soil moisture and the irrigation duration.
  2. Inspect carefully beside representative plants without damaging major roots.
  3. Compare wetting near and between emitters.
  4. Note runoff, ponding or water passing below the useful root zone.

Adjust one thing at a time

Use the cactus cultivation reference and local crop advice to interpret the observations. Change duration or layout in one small section before changing the whole field. Record rainfall, plant age and visible stress. Similar-looking plants can have different water needs during establishment, production and cool weather.

Namibian climate and microclimate

Namibian sandy and finer-textured soils spread irrigation water differently. Heat, wind, frost and rainfall change the schedule through the year. Cactus drought tolerance does not make one grower’s monthly routine universal.

Your first practical step

Time and measure several emitters, then calculate litres delivered to one clearly marked row section.
